Patty vs PHattie: what makes ours different

October 20, 2026

You know the Jamaican patty. But have you met the PHattie?

Ask anyone who loves Jamaican food about a classic patty, and they'll probably have a favourite filling, a preferred level of spice and a strong opinion about the perfect pastry.

The Jamaican patty has earned its place as an iconic Caribbean food. It's convenient, satisfying and full of flavour.

But at Crumb & Glaze, we're asking a different question: what happens when you take the familiar patty experience and give it a Crumb & Glaze twist?

Meet the PHattie.

First, what makes a Jamaican patty so popular?

The traditional Jamaican patty is recognised for its golden pastry, distinctive seasoning and savoury filling.

Beef is a classic choice, although chicken, vegetables and other fillings are popular too. The pastry is often flaky or crumbly, with colour traditionally coming from ingredients such as turmeric or other seasonings.

Patties are enjoyed as a quick lunch, an on-the-go snack or part of a larger meal. They're a familiar sight in bakeries, food shops and Jamaican communities around the world.

For many people, a patty is comfort food. It's something you can grab on a busy day and still feel like you've had a proper taste of home.

So, what is a PHattie?

The PHattie is our opportunity to put a distinctive Crumb & Glaze identity on a much-loved bakery favourite.

It's not about dismissing the traditional patty. It's about giving customers a reason to try something different and making the experience memorable enough to come back for.

Whether you're already a dedicated patty lover or someone discovering Jamaican bakery food for the first time, the PHattie gives you another reason to explore our menu.

The name itself creates a sense of fun and personality. It's familiar enough to connect with the classic patty, yet distinctive enough to stand out as a Crumb & Glaze product.

Patty vs PHattie: what's the difference?

  • The inspiration: the traditional patty is a Jamaican bakery classic; the PHattie is our own take on the patty experience.
  • The identity: the patty is a familiar, established food tradition; the PHattie is a distinctive Crumb & Glaze product.
  • The appeal: the patty is a trusted savoury favourite; the PHattie is something new to discover on our menu.
  • The experience: enjoy a classic patty, or explore what makes our PHattie special.

What goes into our PHatties

Our PHatties are made with flaky, golden Jamaican-style pastry made with butter, beef fat and evaporated milk. Then we fill them with flavours you won't find in a standard patty:

  • Beef & Cheese PHattie: richly seasoned minced beef with onion, green sweet pepper and melted cheese.
  • Curry Mutton Mac & Cheese PHattie: seasoned curry mutton and creamy four-cheese mac & cheese, two comfort-food favourites in one pastry.

Can't choose? Our Mixed PHattie Box has three of each.

Why we're giving the PHattie its own identity

Great food businesses need more than products that taste good. They need products that customers remember, talk about and recommend.

A distinctive product name helps build that identity. It gives customers something specific to ask for and creates opportunities for social media content, customer reviews and conversations about the food.

At Crumb & Glaze, we want our products to be more than another item on a menu. We want them to become part of the experience customers associate with our brand.

The PHattie gives us a way to celebrate Jamaican food culture while building something recognisably our own.

Which side are you on?

Are you a traditional patty loyalist, or are you ready to discover the PHattie?

There is room for both. Sometimes the classics are classics for a reason, and sometimes a fresh take on a familiar favourite is exactly what you need.
